Medieval Clothing
The clothes medieval people wore showed where you stood in the feudal system. The materials they had and used were wool, silk, linen, cotton, leather, and fur. Fabrics like taffeta and velvet were made from silk, linen, and cotton. They used certain weaving techniques to make these fabrics. These were more of the expensive fabrics and were not generally available in the earlier time of the Middle Ages. There were also many colors to wear. You could achieve any color of the rainbow, but if you wanted the color not to fade you had to add the substance of mordant.
Almost everyone in the Middle Ages wore a hat. Hats could indicate a job or station in a person’s life. A hat was also a fashion statement. It helped keep off sun in hot weather, stay warm in winter, and dirt out of their hair. It was considered rude to knock someone’s hat off. Also, in some cases, it was considered assault too. Another thing people wore were hoods. They were most often attached to jackets and capes.
